>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LETS GO MATZ!!!

I'll only do the LETS GO MATZ thing this one time. I swear. Don't start throwing stuff at me.

Long Island native pitching prospect Steven Matz arrived yesterday in the most irregular way.
First off, his scheduled major league debut was to be at 1:10pm. Due to the suspended game on Saturday his start time was delayed. And nobody knew how long it would be delayed because when Matt Harvey's start the day before was cut short by rain the score was tied at 1-1.

When he returned home after Saturday's suspended game, Matz spent his evening sanding the bat that Las Vegas teammate Matt Reynolds gave him to use. (You might remember Reynolds from spring training>. Why we haven't seen him up yet is a mystery to me.)

It turned out the pick-up game, which was stopped for rain going into the seventh, didn't even start on time. The delayed game was delayed an additional 21 minutes, so it resumed after 1:30pm.The Mets finally won in walk-off fashion in the 13th, thanks to Joey Votto getting all fumble fingered.

So Steven Matz finally took the mound a little after 4:30 in the afternoon. While watching the end of the first game my thoughts turned to Matz. I thought that it was most unfortunate that he should have to make his first appearance on such an unorganized day. Even the weather didn't want to cooperate. And keep in mind that Matz had arrived at the stadium around 10:30am.

When Reds lead off batter Brandon Phillips smacked the 5th pitch of the game out of the park (although just barely) for a home run I though,"Oh, no! We're doomed". But Matz didn't think that. He was unfazed. "I just thought, you know what, I just got my first batter out of the way and now it's time to go to work," Matz would say after the game.

And all he did was go on to pitch 7.2/3 innings, limit Cincinnati to 2 runs on 5 hits, and win his first big league ballgame. Matz pitching was superb aside from the two long balls he surrendered. I witnessed a wicked curve ball and a nice fastball that sweeps through the strike zone.

But that's not what everyone's gonna be talking about around the water cooler today. Because Matz did more. Matz made history.

After the lead off homer Matz settled down. You could see he was amped. Some of his fastballs were flying up,up and away out of the zone. But he harnessed his stuff and showed he was ready to be a major league pitcher. And a major league batter.

In the Mets second Darrell Cecilani started it off by trickling a grounder up the middle, an easy play that Reds shortstop Eugenio Suarez (who had just a horrendous series in the field for the Reds) booted and Cecil was on at first. Two productive outs got Cecil to third for Eric Campbell, who Cincinnati decided to walk intentionally to get to the pitcher, Matz. Sound baseball strategy one would think. Except when stuff happens in baseball. And stuff happened.
Matz's family and friends in attendance.

The lanky Metropolitan pitched lefty but batted righty. As he strode up to the dish I noticed that he wore no batting gloves. Tough guy, huh?

Matz first hit, a 2 run double.
Matz amazed me and you and his family and everyone by slugging a long drive that kept on curling away from Red center fielder Billy Hamilton. It dropped beyond his reach and both Ceciliani and Campbell scored. In his first major league at-bat Matz had given himself a 2-1 lead, clearing the bases with a stand up double! Amazin'!

HA! Hamilton sucks.

So right off the bat Steven Matz made Metropolitan history. He became the first Mets pitcher to drive in two runs in his first major league at-bat. But he wasn't done.

Next time up, he singled. In the bottom of the sixth, Matz stepped in with the bases loaded and a 3-2 lead. He smacked a single into left  for 2 more RBI's! When it was all over  Matz went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI.

Matz became the first player -- pitcher or otherwise -- in franchise history to drive home four runs in his debut, and the first Mets pitcher to do it in any game since Dwight Gooden in 1990. He was the first pitcher to have three hits in his debut since Jason Jennings did it for the Rockies in 2001.
He is the first pitcher EVER to have three hits and four RBIs in his first Major League game (11th player overall).

This shouldn't be a surprise. Matz batted .304 with three RBIs in 25 plate appearances at Triple-A Las Vegas before his call-up Sunday. Yet it was. It was historically amazin'.

Matz second hit, a single to left.

Matz's third hit, a single that knocked in two more.

So we have Plawecki, Synderguaard, and now Matz mfc FUTURE STAR cards, all released for their MLB debuts.
Should I retro make one for Harvey and Wheeler? For Travis?

After the amazin' game Matz said, "Jacob deGrom told me, 'Now you're a big leaguer, you let up a couple home runs, you got a couple strikeouts, got a couple hits. You did it all today.'"

I haven't named a fan of the month in over a month. Months even. But I saw a great fan at this game. I don't know if he's a fan of the Mets or just his grandson, but no matter. Grampa Matz is awarded MFC Mets Fan Of The Month for June.

"Holy Shit!"

mfc Chico Escuela & SNL '78 Tribute

Garrett Morris introduced Chico Escuela to the Mets universe on November 11th, 1978. The character first appeared on Saturday Night Live in a St. Mickey's Knights of Columbus sketch with Dan Akroyd and John Belushi. Garrett's Chico, a retired baseball player, was the guest of honor at the meeting.

Belushi introduced him as "The immortal Chico Escuela", a former all-star baseball player who came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic and played Major League ball for the Chicago Cubs.

Chico, who spoke very little English, was being paid $900 to give a speech at the event.

This was his speech:
"Thank you berry much. Baseball been berry berry good to me. Thank you. God bless you. Gracias!"

He then returned to his seat.
After being prodded to say more by Belushi's character, Escuela got up, returned to the podium and added,

"Keep you eye, keep you eyes, on de ball."

Then he returned to his seat.

If I'm going to speculate about Escuela's fictional history I would have him coming to the Mets from the Cubs in early 1971, and it is reflected in his 1971 mfc/O-Pee-Chee issue baseball card.

So Chico was introduced to our universe, but he was not yet a player for the Mets. How about that? We'll get into it after I say a few words about Saturday Night Live, circa 1978.
And when I say "a few words" you should know by now that you probably wanna grab a snack because I will just go on and on and on....

Reporter:"In a moment, Lee Harry Oswald, the man police say shot President John F. Curry, will be brought down this corridor toward a waiting car and then transported to Houston County Jail, where he will probably remain until his trial.
Uh -- there seems to be some, uh, activity now -- yes! There's Oswald now. Now, police claim that they have an airtight case against him. Oswald's motive appears to have been jealousy -- evidently, the handsome young president had been having an affair with Oswald's wife, the beautiful Boshai ballerina, Marina Harry Oswald. Of course, uh -- police have the gun -- Oswald denies ANY knowledge of this. And, uh -- he will be under, uh -- heavy and federal state guard --

Wait! A man just jumped out the crowd -- an overweight man has --"

"LIVE FROM NEW YORK,
 IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!!!"

These were the prime days of NBC-TVs Not Ready For Prime-Time Players. John Belushi was still alive and the troupe, which debuted with Saturday Night Live in 1975 (initially called NBC's Saturday Night), was almost intact. All were still aboard with the exception of Chevy Chase who had left the ensemble show early in 1976 during the 2nd season. Now in its 4th year SNL was reaching it's zenith in popularity.

1978 would bring us such SNL classic sketches like The French Chef with Dan Akroyd's profusely bleeding Julia Childs.

(interesting side note: The French Chef skit was written for the previous weeks show as a skit for guest host Walter Matthau. It was cut for time and added to the following weeks show with Akroyd playing the now famous role)

The Coneheads, who were rookies in 1977, were going strong. In '78they were visited by Frank Zappa. Georg Festrunk and Yortuk Festrunk were two wild and crazy guys who also first surfaced the year before. Steve Martin performed King Tut for the first time in 1978.

Nick "Winters" the  lounge singer performed the theme from "Star Wars" on January 28th, 1978. Nick always had a different 'seasonal' last name (i.e. Winters, Summers, Springs, etc.) or sometimes a surname more specific to the sketch ("Nick Sands"&"Nick Slammer"). Although he would perform at such unfortunate gigs as airport bars, prisons, and dives, he would always sing his heart out.

Dick Herkiman was pretty much just Nick in the shower.

1978 was the first time Belushi shouted"Cheezborger,Cheezborger,
Cheezborger...No Coke! Pepsi!"in the Olympia Cafe.

Mr. Bill (SNL rookie year 1976) was still being squashed regularly.
Mr. Bill came to life in 1974 when Walter Williams created a short film starring a Play-Doh doll named Mr. Bill. His homemade movie, a parody of bad animation, won a contest held by “Saturday Night Live” in its first season. Mr. Bill became so popular that he spent seven years on SNL, and his appearances grew to 11 spots a season at his peak.

Weekend Update's classic Point/Counterpoint debuted on April 22, 1978, and for the first time Dan Aykroyd called Jane Curtin "an ignorant misguided slut."

Jane Curtain was known as the normal one in the cast. On the show she frequently played straight-woman characters, often as a foil to John Belushi and Gilda Radner. Curtin anchored SNL's Weekend Update segment in 1976–77, and was paired with Dan Aykroyd in 1977–78 and Bill Murray in 1978–80.

Guest host Eric Idle said that Curtin was "very much a 'Let's come in, let's know our lines, let's do it properly, and go' ... She was very sensible, very focused", and disliked the drug culture that many of the cast participated in. Show writer Al Franken stated that she "was so steady. Had a really strong moral center, and as such was disgusted by much of the show and the people around it"

"The Mets lick Montreal and more, after this word from our sponsors"

In the same show that Aykroyd first called Curtin an "ignorant misguided slut", Don Kirshner (long time SNL band leader Paul Shaffer) introduced brothers Jake and Elwood Blues, The Blues Brothers, who performed "Hey, Bartender".

The Blues Brothers spun off to recording (A Briefcase Full Of Blues-1978) and movie fame (The Blues Brothers-1980) and were the first SNL characters to make the transition to the big screen. They were also the last to do so until Wayne's World made it's debut on SNL in 1989 (the movie was released in 1992). The Coneheads were made into a movie in 1993, many years after they last regularly appeared on the show (The Coneheads are currently appearing in some very funny TV commercials for State Farm Insurance).

When I first saw the Blues Brothers I remember thinking: this is the coolest! This is the perfect bit for Belushi and Aykroyd. I bought A Briefcase Full Of Blues the week it came out on vinyl. I didn't exactly play it out, I think that my heavy rotation leaned towards Peter Gabriels 2nd album, Gerry Rafferty's City to City, Billy Joels 52nd Street, Sir Army Suit by Klaatu and The Who's Who Are You ('78 was also the year that Warren Zevon, my namesake, became an Excitable boy). But I did play Briefcase quite a bit. All the songs were great. This wasn't a comedy album. This was some excellent asskickin' live music.

The great Gilda Radner was still with us and doing classic characters like Roseanne Roseannadanna, who became a regular Weekend Update correspondent in 1978. Roseannadanna made her first appearance in 1977 doing a fake commercial called
"Hire The Incompetent".

At the shows inception in 1975 she was the first performer cast. Radner had a busy year in 1978. She did the voice work as the lead witch in Witches Night Out, an animated television Halloween special that premiered on NBC October 27.

She played as herself on The Muppet Show and she appeared in a cameo role, playing Mrs. Emily Pules in THE RUTLES: All You Need Is Cash, the classic mockumentary from Monty Python's Eric Idle and Neil Innes which was released in 1978.

Side note: A number of SNL'rs appeared in the Rutles first TV special. Lornes Michaels played a Rutles merchandiser. Dan Aykroyd played Brian Thigh (ex-record producer who turned down the Rutles). Bill Murray was Murray the K superstar D.J., and John Belushi was Ron Decline, the most feared promoter in the world (pictured with his henchmen, Franken & Davis).

To cap off her year in 1978 Gilda won an Emmy Award in for her work on SNL.

The Nerds: Lisa Loopner (Gilda) and Todd DiLaMuca (Bill Murray) were introduced in 1978.

Todd's name was originally given as "Todd LaBounta", but was changed in later sketches after legal action was threatened by a real person with that name. When the earlier LaBounta "Nerd" sketches were re-run on repeat SNL broadcasts, the audio was re-edited so that Todd's last name was not heard.

Jane Curtin's Joan Face, The Franken and Davis Show (Senator Al Franken & the late Tom Davis), Don Novello's Father Guido Sarducci,  all hit our TV sets for the first time in 1978.
Since his rookie year Father Guido Sarducci has had 31 appearances on SNL, the most of any of the recurring characters not in the regular cast.

Bill Murray, now Weekend Update's co-anchoralong with Jane Curtin, interviewed a choking Elizabeth Taylor (John Belushi) on the same show that Chico Escuela debuted in as a lodge guest. SNL was on top of it's game.

A month later on December 8th, 1978 Escuela would appear as the new sports correspondent on Weekend Update. Monty Python's Eric Idle hosted this episode with a very artsy appearance by musical guest Kate Bush. I won't get into the list of musical guests in 1978. As with the hosts, I would go on way too long yakkin' about 'em.

This time Chico Escuela would be introduced as a retired baseball player who played for the New York Mets ! Woo-Hoo!!

Here is the script for Chico's first Weekend Update on December 9th, 1978.
Ironically it involves baseball great Pete Rose who just recently confirmed that he will never come clean and in not doing so by now, will never get into the Hall Of Fame. At least during his lifetime, quite possibly forever.

Jane Curtin: Now, we'd like to welcome a new member to our Update team, the former All-Star second baseman for the New York Mets, Chico Escuela. Welcome, Chico. [Chico clears his throat, photo of smiling Chico Escuela in baseball uniform and holding a bat]Chico will be covering the sports scene for Weekend Update. [applause for Chico, a Dominican ballplayer who sits opposite Jane - he has a thick Dominican accent and speaks very little English]
Chico Escuela:Thank you. Thank you, berry, berry much. ... Base-ball ... been berry, berry good to me. ... Thank you, Hane. ... [Photo of major league ballplayer Pete Rose] Pete-ee Rose ... Base-ball been berry, berry good to Pete Rose. ... Three - point - two - million - dollar para Pete Rose. Charlie Hustle, you bet. ... Thank you very, very much.
[National Football League schedule is shown]In - foot-ball ... I don't know - football. ... In Dominican Republic, foot-ball is -- how you say, Hane? Um - Oh! -- soccer! Your football-- [pause]I don't know. ... [Hockey graphic]In National Hockey League ...[shakes his head]I don't know hockey ... [applause, photo of smiling Chico again] In base-ball-- Base-ball been berry, berry good to me! ... Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much.[applause]Hane? Thank you, Hane.
Jane Curtin:[genuinely enthusiastic]Great job, Chico. I'm glad that we haven't hired just another stupid ex-jock sportscaster....

Escuela's catchphrase became kinda famous in no time at all after that: "Beisbol beeen bery, bery good to me!"

Chico's next SNL appearance was on January 27th, 1979 where he extolled the virtues of keeping your eyes on de ball.

On the February 17th, 1979 SNL Weekend Update Esquela reported on his intention to return to major league baseball, attempting a comeback with the New York Mets at age 41.
In 1979 Garrett Morris and the SNL crew traveled to St. Petersburgh Florida to film the segments.

Bill Murray, the book, & Ed Kranepool.
In spring training of 1979, Chico's unsuccessful comeback attempt was documented on several Update segments. Without these on the field interviews by Bill Murray, with the inclusion of Mets players playing along, Chico's legendary place in Met history would be a footnote. The one joke Weekend Update bits would not have been enough. These filmed clips from Florida turned Escuela into classic stuff. Murray set it up by reporting that shortly before his arrival Escuela wrote a tell-all book entitled Bad Stuff 'Bout the Mets.

This is really what caught my sense of humor. I thought the name of the book was hilarious and I was so thrilled as a Mets fan that SNL was sending them up this way. I was really down on the Mets after trading Tom Seaver in 1977, and I turned my back on the team. These spring training reports helped me in finding my way back as a fan. Actually, just the fact that Chico played for the Mets was the reason I was endeared to Escuela. The book and these filmed segments just cemented it.

The book was molded after Jim Bouton's Ball Four, but a spoof expose in which Chico dished on his teammates little known behind the scenes antics. Tom Seaver took up two parking spaces. Yogi Berra was "a berry, berry bad card player." Ed Kranepool "once borrow Chico's soap and no give back."

The comeback: Escuela's 1980 mfc baseball card.

Chico Escuela's 1972 mfc baseball card.
Below is Chico's 1972Blue mfc card.

Could there be a character like Chico in today's uptight society? I don't think so.And this was an African American man playing a Dominican. A retired Hispanic ballplayer with limited command of the English language. And the only sport he knew anything about was baseball. That's it. That was the joke.

Now,  they were poking fun at Escuela's limited knowledge of English, and in a way, of all Dominican Republic ballplayers who had not learned the language, yet made good money playing baseball in America.

And it WAS funny. I laughed, you laughed, Dominican Republic ballplayers laughed. In the late 1990's Cubs pumped up slugger Sammy Sosa used Escuela's trademark line, "Beisbol beeen bery, bery good to me!"in a joking mannera number of times in post game interviews.

No one screamed racism or anything like that. I think the only one I've ever heard complaining about the Escuela character was Garrett Morris himself, who was very dissatisfied with his place on the show and expressed the opinion that he was usually typecast in stereotypical roles. And this is true, he was.But back then people had the ability to poke fun at each other and nobody did it better than SNL.

Seems to me that people in America can longer laugh at themselves these days, and that's a real shame.

I wasn't aware of the Topps Archives SNL cards from 2011. I collected cards heavy (off & on) in the early 70's, late 80's and early 90's. I've always grabbed a few packs of Topps a year, just to see how they look, maybe get a Mets player, but from around 1993 to just recently I didn't pay any attention at all to these side sets. The first Archives cards I ever bought were in 2013, and I loved them. 1972 & 1985 designs (among others) were nostalgically thrilling to see, with current ballplayers pictured. Those cards were a big influence in my dabbling in custom cards and the creation of this blog.

 I like these.
I love that they show a sense of humor. Father Quido Sarducci playing for the Holy Smokes. Nick Summers on the Loungers! Ha! Some might think "Now with Angels" on Chris Farley's card inappropriate. I don't. I think it's beautiful. The Merry Christmas/Dick In A Box card is classic. I'm a little surprised Topps had the balls to release that one. Bravo Topps.

The use of highlight cards was a great choice and I have only seen the ones pictured here. I hope there are many more of those. These are all the SNL card images I could find online. I looked pretty hard and could not find a checklist. There would have to be a Chico Escuela card, I would think.

Most of these cards were shared by

 The Chico Escuela Wiffleball League
Looking for footage of Chico's appearances on youtube (none to be found -thanks NBC) I came across the Chico Escuela Wiffleball league video. I got a kick out of this. Reminded me of the days my brothers and I played wiffle ball in the back yard. I looked for part one but could not find it. I'd like to thank Garrett Henson for making and sharing this video.

Congratulations Jacob deGrom, 2015 ALLSTAR!

Lets get Familia where he belongs.
ON THE N.L. ALL-STAR TEAM!
Him being a New York Met is one reason to vote for him but I'm voting for him because he's the best damn closer in the league!
And I want to make another Mets All Star Game player card.

Now that's the way to go into the break!
Four wins in a row (7 of the last 9) capped off by Kirk Nieuwenhuis's historic 3 home run performance at Citi Field.

After the awful news about the Steven Matz injury I didn't think there was any chance the Mets could make me feel up going into the All-Star break. But they managed to pull it off. The great pitching finally getting some accompaniment in the form of the long ball.

After being barren of power (and offense in general) for quite some time New York managed to hit 10 home runs in the last 4 games! That's incredible. It's also the kind of thing that can drive a fan crazy. Crazy with hope that this team can stay afloat through the second half.

You can't say the 11 game winning streak back in April was squandered. Although you could say we've been living off it.

After a 15-8 opening month New York has gone 34-39 (13-15 in May, 12-15 in June) to stay in the race at the break with an overall record of 47-42. A respectable 5 games over .500 and a heartening 2 games out of first.

Considering all the injuries and the lack of offense it's pretty incredible that they have been able to hang. We lost Wheeler for the season in spring. We lost Wright for who knows how long 8 games into the season. Blevins:CRACK! d'Arnaud: CRUNCH! And d'Arnaud again. Then all that air that was let out of the Matz balloon last week. Recalling the 4 game sweep by the Cubs in May or the 7 game losing streak in June retouches feelings of despair, displaying this team at its lowest depths. But there has been a bunch of highs.

The 11 in a row. Lucas Duda's wicked start. Jacob deGrom's continued excellence. Synderguaard's appearance, performance and continued growth. Steven Matz and his astonishing debut. Harvey readjusting well after surgery and becoming a sideshow in a rotation of aces.  All these pitchers hitting for a higher average than our bench. Flores decent power numbers to start, Granderson carrying the offense on his back for a few. Duda heating up again.

And to top it all off a fantastic half a season so far from our closer Jeurys Familia, who backed into the role when Jenrry Mejia was suspended. I always thought Familia had better stuff. He has been famtabulous, racking up 27 saves (out of 29 chances) with an eeny weeny 1.25 ERA. Jeurys has really risen to the occasion and is one of the best closers in the game right now.

He should have made the N.L. All Star Team. Shame on you Met fans who didn't vote.

After a hideously bad start on the road the Mets turned that around a little bit at the end there, taking the last two road series (4-2). I hope that's a sign of  future improvement on the road because if we are going to compete we have to do better from here on out. New York was 15-28 away from Citi, 32-14 at home. The standings at the break:
 Note the runs scored/runs allowed.
________________________________________________________

It's hard to believe that the Mets have never had a player hit 3 home runs in one game in any of their home ballparks during their history. Not at the Polo Grounds, not at Shea, not in their new digs, Citi Field. Nine Mets have hit 3 HRs in a game, all on the road. The Mets have been walking this earth some 54 years now. That's pretty amazin'.

A wacky season for Kirk Nieuwenhuis. When he was claimed on waivers by the Angels earlier in the season I thought that's the last we'd be seeing of him as a Met. But he flopped on the Angels and the Mets were able to re-claimed him off waivers when L.A. designated him for assignment.

Nieuwenhuis came into Sunday's game 7 for 66 (.106) with zero homers on the season. He hit his first home runs off Rubby De La Rosa and his third off Randall Delgado. They were two solo shots and a two-run job. One to each field too. Quite a display. We need Kirk to be big off the bench in the second half. Or big in the line up if Cuddyer don't get it in gear. Platoon w/Lags? Too soon to say but it's pretty clear that Lagares is not the same player who amazed me continuously and in many ways throughout 2014.

So the Mets go into the break winning seven of their last nine games.
I'd have to call that a high note.

What can I say about Jacob deGrom? He was able to sneak aboard last season and walk away with the Rookie Of The Year Award. His continued excellence is nothing short of phenomenal.

The New York Mets right-hander fanned three A.L All Stars in the sixth inning to become the first pitcher in All-Star Game history to record three strikeouts in an inning with 10 pitches or less.

"That was unreal," deGrom said following the game.
DeGrom's first eight pitches came in at an average speed of 97 mph before dropping a pair of 83 mph curveballs for his third K to end the inning.
Jason Kipnis, who was facing deGrom for the first time in his career and was his second victim, summed up his at-bat in simple terms:
"Heater, heater, heater, heater," Kipnis said. "It was good morning, good afternoon, ball outside, goodnight."

Mets Who've Fanned Three in an Inning in All-Star Play
    Tom Seaver (1968)
    Tug McGraw (1972)
    Dwight Gooden (1984)
    Sid Fernandez (1986)
    Jacob deGrom (2015)
    Thanx Edge^

The American League beat the National League 6-3 in a game that featured a number of intriguing stat lines.
  • Mike Trout became the sixth player in MLB history to hit a leadoff home run in an All-Star game and is the first to do it since Bo Jackson in 1989.
  • Trout led off the 2012 All-Star game with a single, 2013 with a double, 2014 with a triple, and 2015 with a home run.
  • Zack Greinke struck out four batters in two innings, becoming the first pitcher to do so since Pedro Martinez struck out five in 1999.
  • Lorenzo Cain singled off Madison Bumgarner in the fourth inning. Cain went 1-for-10 against Bumgarner in last year's World Series.
  • Clayton Kershaw, who was viewed as the biggest All-Star snub and was added to the roster as an injury replacement, allowed two runs off three hits in one inning for the worst line of the night.
  • Los Angeles Angels' players scored the first three runs. All of them were given up by Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers.
  • Jacob deGrom became the first pitcher in All-Star history to strike out three batters in one inning with 10 or fewer pitches.
  • Trout and Andrew McCutchen became the second leadoff hitters in history to both homer in an All-Star game.
  • Brian Dozier, who was an injury replacement for Jose Bautista, homered off Mark Melancon in his first All-Star at-bat.
  • The six runs were the most the AL scored in an All-Star game since 2005.
  • Aroldis Chapman's pitches to Mike Moustakas in the ninth inning registered at 102, 103, 102, and 103 mph.

I should have made a card for each of those highlights. Shame on me.
PS: Those softball lookin' ASG caps were ridiculously bad.

After a dismal showing out of the All-Star break the Mets finally made some moves and made some noise.
Michael Conforto became the 1000th New York Metropolitan in the team's 54 year history!!

There was a lot of talk about bringing up top prospect Michael Conforto. I really didn't think we'd see him this soon. Cuddyer hitting the DH was the final factor and it was nice to see Sandy Alderson doing more than just being intelligently glib.

Conforto's mfc Future Star card will be added to the 2015 collection. We have Plawecki, Synderguaard, Matz, and now Mike.

Moves! Trades! Hold on to your hat cause the Mets did stuff these last few days!

There's been a lot of chatter and demand for bringing up top prospect Michael Conforto . Well, the Mets needed an outfielder with Cuddyer going down and they went for it, calling up Conforto to fill the gap. I really like this move. If the team isn't going to spend, bring him on up. They did and he didn't disappoint.

I think if Topps put the Donruss rated rookie logo on one of their cards they'd get in all kinds of trouble. But I can do it. And overdo it with the Topps RC symbol. My defense is that watching the Mets this season has driven me insane! MUHaHAHAHaHAhAHAAAaaa*cough.

New York entered last Friday nights game last in the NL in runs scored, batting average and slugging percentage. Mets GM Sandy Alderson went and got two able bats in Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson in a trade. The Atlanta Braves got prospects John Gant and Robert Whalen in return.

He also made a trade with the Oakland A's for two time All-Star Tyler Clippard, a very good relief pitcher. Sandy Alderson gave up 20 year old minor-league pitcher Casey Meisner. The Athletics kicked in a cool $million$.

Alderson did great. Casey Meisner is good but expendable. Meisner was a 3rd round draft pick in 2013 and is 10-4 with a 2.35 ERA in 18 starts this year.
Mejia does not have an mfc card
because I'm still a bit ticked off at him
.

Due to Jenrry Mejia suspension for PED use earlier this season this move had to be made. Mejia might help big time down the stretch, but because of his stupidity he won't be available if the Mets make the post season. So if we make the playoffs we are going to need that extra experienced arm in the pen. I like Alderson's thinking and show of confidence. If Meisner ends up a hall of fame pitcher, don't blame Sandy. Blame Mejia.

Bottom line: The Mets now boast a bullpen that features four pitchers with big league closing experience: Familia, Mejia, Parnell, and Clippard.

Uribe is an experienced, seasoned veteran who plays the game hard. I don't know much about Johnson but I know he hit a home run in his first game as a Met player, so I kinda like him already. And Uribe has already won a game in walk off fashion. Amazin'.

As you can see in the card above the additions of Uribe and Johnson has already added some punch to the lineup.

mfc SPECIAL : 15 runs/21 hits!!
Dodgers @ Mets, July 25th 2015

It was nice to see the Mets erupt for 21 hits, their most since 2010. The final tally was 15 runs for New York in their highest-scoring game since April 2013, and their biggest run total ever against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Call up Michael Conforto got his first major league hit in the first inning, an infield single. In the third he smacked his second MLB hit, a double. In the fifth he knocked his third career hit, another double, and in the sixth he lined a single against a lefty shift for his fourth big league hit. Last time up he had a chance to make history by getting 5 hits in his second MLB game but he opted for a walk. Not a bad day for the rook.

The card below depicts Conforto's first hit. You can see Jacob deGrom, who would pitch a gem the following day, on the dugout rail. What's that with him? Some kind of a rally racoon? AHHHHH!

New New Yorker Kelly Johnson stroked two hits including a home run in his first game in a Mets uniform. Could a simple trade like the one for Johnson and Uribe be the catalyst that this team needed? It's too soon to tell but there is no doubt they both payed instant dividends. Couple that with Confortos very nice start and Kirk Niewenhuis's hot hitting and it's almost like a different team the last two games. An additional big bat could put New York over the top and there is talk that the Mets are still going to make some moves.

THE CONFORTO SHIFT

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly put a lefty shift on for Conforto his fourth time up, his eighth at-bat in the bigs. We all found this very amusing, especially Conforto, who showed Mattingly where to put his shift.

It IS the rally racoon! AHHHH!!!!
Conforto was the first Mets player in franchise history with a four-hit performance within his first two career games. He is also the fifth player in the last 100 years to score four or more runs in one of his first two major league games.

Matt Harvey (9-7), who had an excellent outing, doubled and singled, driving in two runs. He pitched seven innings as the Mets ended a three-game losing streak. Matt also became the first pitcher in Mets history to record three straight two-RBI games.

A collision in the 6th inning between Tejeda & Conforto looked bad. Fortunately no one was hurt.

RALLY RACOON! RALLY RACOON! AHHHH!
Lucas Duda cranked two four baggers in the 6th & 7th innings. Thats the third time this season Duda homered twice in a game. Ruben Tejada added three hits. Granderson roped a double. Daniel Murphy went yard.
It was pre-game fireworks for the Heart concert that would take place later in the evening.

Juan Uribe showed Mets fans that he still has what it takes to man the hot corner.

I don't know much about the rally racoon. I do know she showed up in the Mets weight room the morning after the 15 run explosion. I know she has a birthmark shaped like an interlocking NY on her forehead. I've been told by people familiar with the Mets thinking that when you turn out the lights she glows orange and blue.
Other than that, I know nothing.
And for some reason whenever I see the rally racoon I scream.
AHHHHHHH!!!!

PEDRO!!HOLA!!HOF!!

Pedro Martinez was inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown N.Y.
A great person, a great pitcher, and a great Metropolitan.

"When you see me," Martinez said, "you can see a sign of hope, of faith, of determination, of strength, courage, with dignity."

Martinez is most known for his dominance with the Boston Red Sox, though he also suited up for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos, New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies in his 18 big league seasons.

"If you reverse the time back 15 years ago, I was sitting under a mango tree without
50 cents to actually pay for a bus. And today I was the center of attention of the whole
city of New York." -- October 2004

"It must've been 6:30 in the morning," Martinez said after the ceremony. "I was having a hard time catching that last hour or two of sleep. And it occurred to me, today, on Father's Day, I don't think the Dominican Republic will have a better image than having me and Marichal, who cleared the way for all of us to Cooperstown, on Father's Day, to be out there and give them the opportunity for them to see their first two sons in the Hall of Fame. I think it was the greatest gift I could probably come up with for Father's Day in the Dominican."

“Don’t look at me as numbers, as baseball, as achievements,” said Martinez, who won three Cy Young Awards and finished his career in 2009 with a 2.93 E.R.A. and 3,154 strikeouts. “I’d like you to see me as a sign of hope for a third world country, for Latin America, someone you can look up to to say, ‘I’m proud of you.’ ”

"The Mets fans, well, if you look at me and you see me going wild, that’s a Mets fan. That’s how we are. So Queens, I love you, too!"

If you're a Mets fan you'd have to live under a rock that's under the ocean that's on a different planet that is in another universe to not have heard about Matt Harvey's return to the mound on Friday.

Any questions and worries we had regarding his health and condition were put to rest as he cut through the first six batters in the Detroit Tigers lineup like they were melted butter. Or, for us fans up north, like they were melted snow (which can't happen soon enough). He was masterful, striking out 3 & sawing off bats. He hit 99MPH on the gun twice and introduced his curve ball, which he hadn't thrown since high school.

Is this any reason, only at the very beginning of spring training, for Mets fans to get excited?
You bet your sweet bippy it is. Can you believe that it's been nearly 18 months since Harvey pitched last? Well, us Metropolitan fans are the most patient people I know. We gotta be.

So in the first 2 televised games of the spring the Mets looked good. They did some coming back, showcased some fine pitching and we won Harveys return engagement on a walk-off home run by future Mets shortstop Matt Reynolds. In todays game prospect Mike Conforto slapped three hits including a long double in the deepest reaches of the left-center field gap, while driving in three runs.

I'm not down in Port St. Lucie but I still may have to put on a pair of shades. The future looks bright.

BASEBALL'S BACK BABY!!!!

Here's an alternate Harvey card that was pulled because it sounded too insensitive to Daniel Murphy.

I kid. I respect Murphy's views on homosexuality and that for some reason he felt they should be shared. Daniel's one of my favorite Mets and I'd like him to stay a New Yorker so I hope this does not work against him in any way. People are so freakin' sensitive these days.

The 2015 New York Mets spring training is in full throttle now, and in no time at all the baseball season will begin anew. Clean slate. Yay!

Last season I tried to do a card a game on this blogs sister site  ( Mets Fantazy Cards 2014 Season Set) but I could not keep up with that pace. I ran out of gas in early September. As a fan of Joe Petruccio's blog, My NY Mets Journal, I have a new found respect for the man. He does a drawing for every Mets game. A drawing! Usually funny and always excellent. I can't do that this season (and also do this blog). It was too much. I tip my hat to Joe and hope this season will be one worth putting all the work that he puts into his Journal.

This season I'll try to do at least one season highlight card a week. Special events and occurrences could make for more. I will be posting them here and not on a separate blog. So enjoy the 2015 season with me here following the Mets Fantazy Cards 2015 Season baseball card Set.

The Mets Fantazy Card 2014 Season Set Blog will be deleted shortly. If anyone wants images of those cards grab em while you can.

CEDPEDES!!!

Just moments before the 4 p.m. trade deadline the Mets acquired slugger Yoenis Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers. Cespedes, 29, batted .293 with an .829 on-base plus slugging, along with 18 home runs and 28 doubles.
A right handed batter, Yoenis has more HRs this season than all the Met right handed batters combined.

A free agent at the end of the season, Cespedes also brings with him a strong arm and solid overall reputation on defense. In addition to substance, he also plays with a flair that should be well-received in New York over the final 2-3 months of the season. He won the All-Star game Home Run Derby at Citi Field in 2013, fans might remember.

Most importantly, the Mets did something to take away the bitterness of the Gomez no-trade fallout and ease the pain of the demoralizing loss the day before, and got a player who might help them more than Gomez ever could over the rest of 2015.

Yoenis will play left field and bat third for the Mets in his debut on Saturday night.

The Trade That Wasn't Made

What a wild wacky and weird bunch of days for the New York Mets and their fans.

First, we hear of a big, much needed trade. Then we found out, Hey, there is crying in baseball.

The Wilmer crying story has been beaten to death so I won't bore you with details you are already familiar with. But how cool is it that Flores would cry if he had to leave the Mets. It's understandable. He has been with the team since the age of 16. It's like his extended family.

And how about Zack Wheeler calling Mets GM Sandy Alderson on the phone and asking him to please not trade him. I love it. I love any player that wants to be a Metropolitan that bad. These days such devotion to a team is a rare thing. That type of thing is usually reserved for us fans.
Alderson said he intended to reach out to Wheeler - but the right-hander called him first to express his desire to remain with New York and that this ''actually had quite an impact'' on Alderson.

Then there was no trade. Of course this wasn't deflating enough (no offense to Mr. Flores). The following day we had to suffer the most backbreaking loss in recent memory.

Then on Friday we heard that there was a trade. A different and better trade. An amazin' trade. More about that later because we have a game to play.

>>>>>The WIlmer Flores Game<<<<<

The first game of this 3 game set with the Washington Nationals was a crucial one. After the events of the last few days the team needed to get it together. I'm sure hearing of the acquisition of Cespedes made them happy. It made us fans positively giddy. But Yoenis would not be available on this day and is slated to start for the Mets on Saturday.

Matt Harvey had the mound vs. Gio Gonzalez. Harvey's last start he found his wicked slider and on this day he looked a lot like Harvey'13.

Flores made one of the best plays you'll ever see a 2nd baseman make in the first.

In the 4th inning Flores continued to be the hero with an RBI single making it 1-0. Meanwhile Matt Harvey was pitching a masterful game, retiring his first 16 batters.

The game went to extras as both teams relief corps did their jobs keeping the game knotted at 1-1. New York continued to flash the leather.

In the 12th inning the Mets were battling Nat reliever Felipe Rivero who was displaying nasty stuff. Rivero had pitched two complete shutout innings and was on the mound to start the 12th inning for Washington.  The first batter he faced was Wilmer Flores.

Flores, who had not hit a homer in 147 at-bats, drove a 1-1 fastball to deep left center for his 11th home run of the season, a game winner.

Fans jumped for joy and went crazy as Flores pumped his arm and pointed to the emblazoned Mets monicker across his chest as he rounded third. Even though it was Wilmers 3rd walk-off hit of the season (tied with the Cubs’ Starlin Castro for the most by a SS) it was the first time he ever hit a walk-off home run.
The Mets went crazy. Citi Field went crazy. I went crazy. You went crazy. How can I describe it?
It was crazy.

Big trade, waa-waa, no trade, Godawful loss, bigger trade, HUGE win, storybook ending.

"The Mets fans were definitely rallying around Wilmer and our team throughout the whole game. I think they felt as much excitement as we definitely felt. Words can’t really describe what has been going through his head -- and us, as a team, the last couple of days. Obviously, everything that happened to him is pretty incredible. For tonight to happen the way it did, it’s pretty unreal. Everybody is so happy for him.”
                                                   ~Matt Harvey

"That is one of the best walk-off homers I've ever seen."
                                                       ~Michael Cuddyer

"I'm sitting here looking at some guys who are outstanding writers. Outstanding. You couldn't write that. You guys couldn't come up with that. And you're good. That's unbelievable."
                                                      ~Terry Collins

"Oh my god. @Mets I can't believe I can actually say this, but is it true that there is now 'A Cespedes for the rest of us'?"
                                                    ~Jerry Seinfeld

Mejia, NO CARD FOR YOU!
                                            ~Zvon

"Mejia is dead to me."
                                                          ~Kevin Michael Fottrell

"It's time to take back the city."

The Mets secured first place in a game that was... what  do you call a game that is beyond "a laugher"? A blowout would be a good term. A shellacking!
Colon pitched an exquisite game and rook Michael Conforto ripped a line homer that gave New York an early lead that was tacked onto mightily as the Mets beat the Marlins to take sole possession of first place in the National League.

From here on out during the run for the pennant there will be a card for every game we are in first place and for every win. Making cards for losses at this point would be such a drag. So why make em? There's always a possibility that I might do up a remarkable loss.

I assume everyone visiting will already know what transpired Mets wise so I won't get in the way with my blabbering ( I should have made a Cespedes and a Bartolo for this game) and hopefully what we have here is a card by card record of the New York Mets run to the World Series.

Jonathan Niese (6-9) pitched a great game. The tall lefty allowed one run and four hits in seven innings for the N.L. East leading Mets. New York has won 5 games in a row, erasing an early deficit to beat the Miami Marlins 5-1.

Everybody hit in this one, thebiggest strokes coming from Campbell, Tejeda and Lagares. And there was this fantastic slide by Wilmer. I must commend his running. I've never seen him move like that.

NEW YORK MAKES ANOTHER TRADE
The Mets have traded a player to be named later to the Athletics for lefty reliever Eric O'Flaherty, the Mets announced after Tuesday's victory.
If you find yourself wondering how a trade could happen since the non-waiver deadline is July 31, here's an explanation as to how trades work in August.

O'Flaherty, 30, is familiar with the NL East, having spent 2009-13 with the Braves. He was outstanding in his time there, too, pitching to a 1.99 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He was one-third of the deadly back-end trio of O'Flaherty, Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel.
O'Flaherty had Tommy John surgery in 2013 and returned late last season with Oakland. He was productive, with a 2.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 15 strikeouts against four walks in 20 innings.

Mets: 3B David Wright (back) participated in a workout before he begins a rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie. ''He hit today, he ran, threw, caught grounders, absolutely looked great,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''Really looked good. He hit some balls hard.''

My sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of
Kaiser Carlile. This is so sad.

I don't mean to make light of this tragedy by making a memorium card. I just felt I had to do something in Kaiser's memory. I can express myself in words instead of images. If this is considered inappropriate I will remove it, but I can assure you that this one was done from the heart.

"I just want everyone to know there is no kind of remorse or

anger towards what happened. This is something that was a

tragedy,"

Chad Carlile, father of 9-year-old batboy Kaiser Carlile, said

at a news conference dotted with tears and

nostalgic laughter. "I've got my loss with my son, but it's just

as hard for them."

"I was able to see their eyes and the love they had for my

son, it was no different than a father's love," he said.

"He was competitive, but in the same breath, he cared about

everyone," Carlile said in his off-the-cuff remarks. "That's

what it is, it's the love that he had for the game."

                                                                          Chad Carlile

"We just lost a little, 9 year old Bee Jay, and it's incredibly sad. No one wrote us a book to tell us how to do this. We're just dealing with it the best way we know how."
                                                                                 Michael Carlile

Put in that situation I don't think I could be half the man Chad Carlile is. My heart goes out to Mr. Carlile and his family.

Matt Harvey pitched seven dominant innings giving up two hits and striking out six. He threw 88 pitches, 64 for strikes. The Dark Knight walked no one.

This marks the 10th time in the past 11 games that the Mets starting pitcher allowed two runs or fewer.

Juan Uribe hit a humongous 3 run homer and Ludas Duda drove in 3 as New York completed a 3 game sweep of Miami. The Mets have won 6 in a row.

Michael Conforto hit a game tying double and WIlmer Flores had the go ahead bloop single to right.

The Washington Nationals lost and the Mets now have a 2 ½ game lead.

I ran into this nice picture of Shea Stadium's scoreboard under construction and I whipped up this mfc SCOREBOARD card to add to the mfc SCOREBOARD collection.

>Jacob deGrom is on a 15-start roll, with a big league-best 1.46 ERA in that span. He makes his sixth career start against an AL team (2-2, 3.06), when New York faces the Orioles in Baltimore on Tuesday.

>1B Lucas Duda (lumbar strain) did not start for a sixth straight game. He walked as a pinch hitter in the 12th Saturday and should be back in the lineup Tuesday, after an off day.

>The Mets dropped to 9-20 vs. the NL Central. They are 48-29 against the rest of the league.

DeGrom took a four-hitter into the eighth inning, Curtis Granderson hit two solo homers and the New York Mets beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 Tuesday night to snap a three-game losing streak.

Making his first appearance at Camden Yards, deGrom (12-6) gave up one run, five hits and a walk in 7 2-3 innings. The right-hander struck out six and lowered his ERA to 1.98, second-best in the National League behind the Dodgers' Zack Greinke.

The shaggy-haired deGrom is 9-2 with a 1.44 ERA in 16 outings since May 11, and New York has won each of his last seven starts - a run that included his first appearance at Tampa Bay.

Granderson connected off Kevin Gausman (2-5) on the game's second pitch, providing deGrom a lead he never relinquished. Granderson also homered in the fifth inning for the first-place Mets.

Granderson has 16 RBIs in his last 16 games. He has 24 HRs versus the Orioles, the most against any team. Curtis also hit his franchise-record seventh leadoff homer of the season, breaking a tie with Jose Reyes (2006).
